Odisha is facing a serious shortage of doctors in government hospitals, with nearly 60 percent of posts lying vacant. The state has sanctioned 15,774 doctor positions, but only 6,271 doctors are currently working in government facilities.
This leaves 9,503 posts vacant, creating pressure on the healthcare system, especially in rural and tribal areas. The shortage affects both general doctors and specialists, leading to longer waiting times and limited access to essential medical services.
To improve the situation, the state government has asked the Odisha Public Service Commission to start filling 5,248 vacant posts as soon as possible. Two new government medical colleges have also begun functioning, but they still need sufficient staff to operate smoothly.
Health experts say the shortage could affect patient care in district and block-level hospitals if urgent steps are not taken. The government has assured that recruitment will be prioritised to strengthen Odisha’s public healthcare system.
