According to a recent study, artificial intelligence programs offer a promising solution to alleviate the administrative burden on doctors, enabling them to see more patients. Swiss researchers found that their AI program, ChatGPT, can generate administrative medical notes up to ten times faster than doctors, while maintaining the quality of the reports. In the study, human orthopedic doctors and ChatGPT independently created discharge papers and notes for six simulated patient cases closely resembling real scenarios.
According to the findings, an expert panel consisting of 15 individuals, unaware of the document's origins, couldn't distinguish between them. Furthermore, the AI program completed the paperwork ten times faster than the doctors. Dr. Cyrus Brodén, a researcher and orthopedic physician at Uppsala University Hospital in Basel, noted that while both ChatGPT-4 and human-generated notes demonstrated comparable quality, the AI produced discharge documents significantly faster. The study, recently published in Acta Orthopaedica, plans to extend its scope by conducting a larger-scale test involving 1,000 genuine patient medical records.
Broden expressed anticipation for the forthcoming project, emphasizing its need for significant resources and collaboration among multiple partners. He highlighted ongoing efforts to meet all data management and confidentiality standards required to initiate the study. Broden underscored the detrimental impact of paperwork on doctors, which not only consumes valuable time but also amplifies their stress levels. He noted that the discourse surrounding healthcare efficiency has long persisted, and with recent advancements in generative AI and language modeling, there's potential to alleviate the administrative load on healthcare professionals. This, in turn, would enable doctors to allocate more time to patient care.
