At present, a total of nine medical institutions, primarily managed privately or under trust-based structures, are encountering limitations in admitting students for the ongoing MBBS course for the 2023-2024 batch. This has resulted in a notable scarcity of 1,500 available seats. Among these institutions, two are situated in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, while the remainder are distributed across Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar.
These institutions have previously been found to exhibit non-cooperative behavior and have faced allegations of misconduct during routine inspections. The inspection teams have also raised a series of concerns, encompassing inadequate staffing levels and the failure to implement the newly introduced camera and biometric attendance system. Consequently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has either rescinded its recognition of these institutions or served them with official notices.
An NMC representative disclosed that these developments coincided with the NMC's initiative to establish a fresh regulatory framework for medical colleges. These directives encompass the incorporation of hospital cameras, an Aadhaar-based biometric attendance system, and the integration of the hospital's health system management data to facilitate ongoing monitoring.
The representative emphasized that while a majority of these institutions managed to regain their recognition through appeals to the NMC or the health ministry, notable deficiencies still persist in some of them.
Furthermore, it was indicated that institutions that address their deficiencies before the onset of the fourth and final round of counseling on September 21 will be permitted to admit students for the current batch. It was clarified, however, that this decision will not impact students who have already enrolled in previous batches.
