A 41-year-old man with a complex medical history, including two failed kidney transplants, recently underwent a successful kidney transplant at a private hospital in the city. The man, of Indian Australian descent, had previously undergone two kidney transplants, both of which were unsuccessful. After being deemed ineligible for another transplant in Melbourne, he sought assistance from the transplant team at Kauvery Hospital in Vadapalani. Following evaluation, his wife and younger brother were identified as potential kidney donors. Despite complications arising from the patient's strong antibodies against his brother's kidney and rare antibodies in his blood, which increased the risk of rejection by 80%, he opted for the desensitization protocol and proceeded with the transplant surgery. Following the surgery, the medical team closely monitored the transplanted kidney for any signs of antibody-related injuries. Within one month post-surgery, the patient was able to discontinue dialysis, and his kidney function returned to normal. The procedure was conducted by Prabhu Kanchi, a nephrologist, Swaminathan Sambandam, a kidney transplant surgeon, and their respective team.
