
India successfully completed its first human clinical trial of gene therapy for ‘haemophilia A’ at Christian Medical College – Vellore, according to Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh. Singh revealed that the trial incorporated a pioneering technique involving the use of a lentiviral vector to express a FVIII transgene within the patient’s own haematopoietic stem cell, enabling the expression of FVIII from specific differentiated blood cells. During a National Science Day event in the national capital, the minister conveyed optimism regarding the imminent commencement of vector manufacturing in India and the progression of subsequent clinical trials. Singh affirmed India's readiness to align with global standards in quantum technology, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. "In certain aspects, we're not just aligned but also leading the way," he stated, highlighting the integration of human interface to amplify the effectiveness of artificial intelligence. Additionally, Singh introduced a compendium of SATHI Clusters, recognizing the leaders of IIT – Hyderabad, BITS – Pilani, and ICT – Mumbai, and unveiled a white paper titled "Evolution: Catalysing Technology-led Ecosystem for Bharat e-Mobility". National Science Day, observed annually on February 28, marks the commemoration of the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Sir CV Raman. It was on this day that Sir CV Raman announced the groundbreaking discovery, ultimately earning him the Nobel Prize in 1930.
