New Delhi: The National Medical Commission has formed a 15-member task force to address the increasing rates of depression and suicides among medical students.
The task force aims to compile a thorough report by May 31, providing insights into the intricacies of mental health challenges and suicides among medical students. Additionally, monthly progress reports will be submitted to uphold transparency and accountability throughout this process. In a statement issued on February 21, an official order highlighted the concerning mental health of medical students, which has led to instances of depression and suicide. In response to this issue, the National Task Force has been formed by the anti-ragging committee of the National Medical Commission (NMC). According to the terms and references, the task force will review existing literature and data concerning the mental health and suicide rates among medical students. It will analyze the factors contributing to these challenges and suggest evidence-based strategies to enhance mental health support and prevent suicides. Moreover, the committee will undertake visits to medical colleges where suicide incidents have been documented. Its primary objective is to develop actionable recommendations focused on promoting the mental well-being of medical students. To support its mission, the task force will hold regular meetings, either virtually or in person, as deemed necessary. Moreover, the committee retains the authority to include additional members as required to enhance its research and ensure the timely delivery of the report. Recent RTI data has revealed alarming statistics indicating that over the past five years, 119 medical students, comprising 64 MBBS students and 55 postgraduate medicos, have tragically died by suicide. Additionally, 1,166 students have dropped out of medical colleges. Disturbingly, incidents of ragging and suicides have been prevalent in numerous medical institutions nationwide, affecting aspirants preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
