Last Saturday, tragedy struck at Yanbacoochie Falls in Lamington National Park when Ujwala Vemuru, a recent medicine graduate and young Indian-Australian woman in her twenties, lost her life while trekking with friends. She attempted to retrieve her camera tripod, which had fallen over a ledge, but tragically slipped and plummeted 20 meters. Despite the efforts of off-duty doctors nearby, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. According to Australian media reports, the challenging process of retrieving Ujwala's body lasted over six hours. Queensland Police and Fire and Emergency Services personnel exerted significant effort to locate and recover the victim. Ujwala, who was practicing at a hospital in Brisbane, hailed from Andhra's Krishna district. In the previous year, she completed her Bachelor of Medical Studies and Doctor of Medicine degrees at Gold Coast's Bond University. Ujwala, originally from Andhra, had previously been recognized as one of "WA's brightest young minds" for her outstanding exam results at Willetton Senior High School in 2018. Her family members have stated that her body will be taken to her grandparents' home in Ertakpadu, Unguthuru Mandal, for the funeral. This tragic incident has prompted local authorities to issue a cautionary advisory, urging bushwalkers to stick to designated paths while exploring Lamington National Park.
