Although papillary thyroid cancer is most prevalent among individuals aged 30 to 50, it is uncommon in children. In January, Mazen, an eight-year-old boy from Yemen, arrived at the hospital with a noticeable 4x4 cm swelling on the front and left side of his neck, which had persisted for three months. Initially thought to be a common lymphatic swelling by doctors in Yemen, thorough investigations later revealed it to be thyroid cancer. At Jaslok, a team of experts repeated the ultrasound of the neck and biopsy of the lesion, given the rarity of diagnosing thyroid cancer at such a young age. Additionally, they conducted a series of blood tests and a PET CT scan to rule out any distant spread in the body. Subsequently, the team chose to proceed with a challenging surgery, considering the patient's age and small neck size. According to Dr. Fazal Nabi, Director of Pediatrics, the boy did not experience any pain or other constitutional symptoms, aside from an enlarged right cervical lymph node. He highlighted the rarity of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid in children, with an incidence of 0.54 per 100,000 children, emphasizing the need for intensive management of calcium and vitamin D levels for optimal outcomes. Following a successful surgery, the boy was discharged on the third day, with his father, Samad Zaid, expressing gratitude to the doctors and stating that Mazen is now thriving and back to his normal life.
