Delhi Police have arrested four men who pretended to be members of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's group to extort money from doctors in the city. The arrested individuals are Rishi Sharma (41), Arun Verma (38), Sabal Singh (45), and Harsh (38). Sabal is a village head from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, and Harsh, previously a street vendor, now owns several luxury cars.
The investigation began after Dr. Animesh, Chief Medical Officer of Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, reported receiving a threatening letter on January 10. The letter, claiming to be from the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate, demanded protection money to be transferred to a specified bank account. Police traced the account to Arun Verma, an e-rickshaw driver from Ghaziabad, who admitted to opening multiple bank accounts for the gang in exchange for commissions.
Further investigation led to Rishi Sharma, identified through CCTV footage making purchases linked to the extortion activities. Upon interrogation, Rishi revealed the involvement of his long-time associates, Sabal and Harsh. The gang initially ran a scam involving fake mobile tower installations but later switched to extortion, using the fear associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang's name.
The group collected publicly available information on Delhi-based doctors and sent them threatening letters via post, demanding money to be deposited into their controlled bank accounts. These letters were dispatched from the Krishna Nagar post office, with Rishi managing the logistics. Police recovered 140 forged mobile tower installation application forms, 11 ATM cards, and multiple smartphones from the accused.
