MBBS doctors in Karnataka have voiced strong disappointment after the state government reduced their promised stipend for mandatory rural service. Earlier, the government had announced ₹75,000 per month for those serving under the National Health Mission (NHM) and ₹62,666 for those under the Health and Family Welfare Services (HFWS). However, a revised order issued on October 28 has fixed a uniform amount of ₹60,000 per month for both categories.

The sudden revision has sparked protests among young doctors, who say the government’s decision is unfair and demotivating. Many pointed out that they had accepted rural postings based on the earlier assurance of ₹75,000. They also criticised the lack of transparency behind the change, calling it a “betrayal of trust” by the authorities.

Leaders from the Indian Medical Association’s Junior Doctors Network also condemned the move. National spokesperson Dr Dhruv Chauhan said several doctors felt cheated as they had made financial and career plans expecting the higher stipend. He added that the decision shows disregard for the hard work and commitment of medical graduates serving in rural and remote areas.

Doctors have urged the Karnataka government to reconsider its decision and restore the previously announced stipend. Many argued that after completing 5.5 years of medical education, the reduced pay fails to match the demanding nature of their work. The issue has once again brought attention to the ongoing debate over fair compensation for young medical professionals in government service.
