The Department of Surgical Disciplines and Department of Nephrology at AIIMS-Delhi, in collaboration with the Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO), successfully performed a dual kidney transplant on a 51-year-old woman patient who had been undergoing dialysis. Dr. Asuri Krishna, an additional professor of surgery at the hospital who led the surgery, revealed this achievement to the media, emphasizing their decision to share it at this time to confirm the patient's well-being. Dr. Krishna disclosed that the donor was a 78-year-old woman who had been admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre on December 19 following a severe head injury from a fall. Subsequently, she was pronounced brain dead, and her family granted consent for organ donation. The recipient had experienced complete kidney failure and was reliant on dialysis. During the procedure, the donor's two kidneys were transplanted heterotopically without removing the recipient's own kidneys, resulting in her now possessing four kidneys. Dr. Krishna reported that the patient's recovery has been positive, with her no longer needing hemodialysis and her transplanted kidney functioning normally. He emphasized the necessity for close monitoring of such patients, noting their favorable progress thus far. Due to the advanced age of the 78-year-old donor, a single kidney would not have provided adequate support for a patient requiring dialysis. Dr. Krishna disclosed that they addressed this by clamping the major artery and vein of the recipient to connect the first kidney, and then positioning the second kidney beneath it. Placing both kidneys on the recipient's right side posed a significant challenge, with both organs stacked on top of each other. However, the recipient experienced a smooth recovery, and both kidneys have been functioning effectively post-surgery, as confirmed by Dr. Krishna. Dr. Krishna highlighted that this uniquthey effectivelye surgery exemplifies the efficient utilization of limited resources to address the significant disparity between the demand and supply of organs in India. By utilizing organs from an elderly donor that might typically have been declined, bridged this gap.
