On Friday, February 23, Acupuncturist Shihabudeen was apprehended by the Nemom police in Thiruvananthapuram. This arrest follows his alleged involvement in the care of a woman who tragically passed away during childbirth, alongside the newborn baby. According to an officer stationed at the Nemom police station, Shihabudeen faces charges under sections 304 (culpable suicide not amounting to murder), 315 (act done with intent to prevent child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth), and 316 (causing death of quick unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code. Despite reports indicating that Nayas, the husband of the deceased woman, who was also implicated in her death, attempted to assault Shihabudeen at the Nemom police station, an officer refuted any such incident when questioned by TNM. Following the death of his wife, Sameera Beevi, who he reportedly compelled to undergo home delivery by watching YouTube tutorials, Nayas was detained along with the newborn. The couple, who already have three children delivered via cesarean operations, purportedly faced restrictions on hospital visits during Sameera's fourth pregnancy, with Nayas insisting on a home birth. Allegedly, the sole medical intervention allowed was acupuncture, and Shihabudeen was the only specialist consulted during this period.
On February 20, during Sameera's labour, she received assistance from Nayas's first wife and their daughter, who was studying acupuncture. However, after more than two hours, Sameera began to experience heavy bleeding and lost consciousness. Despite being promptly taken to a hospital, medical professionals pronounced her dead upon arrival. Despite receiving advice from concerned neighbours, the ward councillor, and even the police to seek medical attention more than a month prior, Sameera and Nayas disregarded all recommendations. Nayas persisted in his insistence on conducting the delivery at home.

A new English-language documentary, “Ayurveda – The Double Helix of Life,” is set to premiere on June 11 in New Delhi, with a special screening at the Film Division Theatre. The film is directed by national award–winner Vinod Mankara and produced by Dr. A V Anoop under the A V A Productions banner, in collaboration with the Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturers Organisation of India.
Clocking in at around 90 minutes, the docu‑film explores how Ayurveda can complement modern medicine, especially in treating conditions like infertility, renal stones, diabetic neuropathy, and even Parkinson’s disease in Germany. It moves from traditional medicine-making practices to recent clinical breakthroughs such as rejuvenating skin treatments and slow-release pharmaceutical pads. Mankara, who also scripted the film, emphasises that the goal is to present Ayurveda as a scientifically valid system, not merely ancient tradition.
Featuring commentary from 52 experts—including doctors, scientists, and officials from the World Health Organization—the documentary aims to counter misinformation and highlight ongoing research in integrative medicine. Officials expected at the premiere include Minister of State for Ayush and Health Prataprao Jadhav and Ayush Secretary Rajesh Kotecha. The film will be shown in multiple countries, aiming to raise global awareness of Ayurveda’s scientific potential.
