
Bhubaneswar: AIIMS Bhubaneswar was honored with the prestigious Asia Safe Surgical Implant Consortium QIP Award 2023 by the World Health Organization (WHO) for its exceptional efforts in ensuring the quality of instrument and implant reprocessing within the hospital. The program aimed to establish and uphold the highest standards of quality for reprocessing various instruments and implants in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD). Among 28 renowned hospitals across Asia, AIIMS Bhubaneswar stood out as the top-performing institution, marking the first time an Indian hospital has achieved this distinction in the program's history. The initiative was supported by 3M India, which played a crucial role in its implementation across different countries, including India. Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, along with the Medical Superintendent, Chairman of the OT Committee, Deans of Academics and Examination, faculty members, administrative and CSSD staff, Nursing In-Charges from various OTs, and members of the Infection Control Committee at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, collectively received the award. They were joined by Ujwala Paul and Puja Pal, Clinical Specialists from 3M India, and other team members. Prof. Seto Wing Hong and Ms. Patricia Cing from WHO, along with Mr. Rajiv Gupta and other representatives from 3M India, virtually participated in the event. Notably, the CSSD unit at AIIMS Bhubaneswar processes around 2,500 packets daily and is CAHO accredited. The sterilization processes, including autoclaving, plasma technique, and EtO (Ethylene Oxide) techniques, are validated through physical, chemical, and biological indicators. Dr. Ashutosh Biswas emphasized the vital role of the CSSD unit in ensuring surgical safety and preventing hospital-acquired infections, stating that the award will inspire them to uphold high standards of patient safety.
