Mangaluru: At the 82nd annual All India Ophthalmological Conference in Kolkata, Dr. Atul Kamath, a consultant ophthalmologist at Yenepoa Medical College, received the prestigious Ophthalmic Heroes of India Award from the All India Ophthalmological Society. This accolade recognized his groundbreaking research on safeguarding the ocular health of ICU patients during the Covid-19 crisis. Dr. Kamath, along with his wife, Dr. Aditi Pai, collaborated on a study during the peak of the pandemic's second wave, under the mentorship of Dr. Indravan Vasava, an assistant professor at Baroda Medical College and Sir SayajiRao Hospital, Vadodara. Their research focused on the impact of ocular care training for nursing staff on ventilated patients in ICUs, aiming to mitigate ocular surface disorders. The study demonstrated the crucial role of nursing staff in early detection and intervention, leading to a significant reduction in ocular disorders by nearly 90%. Notably, approximately 20 nursing staff members in Vadodara underwent a 30-day eye care training program, resulting in a remarkable improvement in identifying danger signs and subsequently decreasing ICU-related eye problems.
