Gurgaon: CK Birla hospital Surgeons Successfully Remove Rare 4.5kg, 23cm Breast Tumor from 42-Year-Old Woman. Five months ago, the breast lump was initially discovered by the patient, who is a dedicated PhD student. Doctors diagnosed the tumor as a phyllodes tumor, a rare condition requiring complete breast removal and subsequent reconstruction surgery. In August 2023, the patient discovered a small lump in the left breast, which, unfortunately, grew from 2cm to a substantial 23cm due to a lack of medical attention. The consultation with the medical team at CK Birla Hospital revealed that the tumor had grown to a degree where preserving the breast was no longer a viable choice. The surgery, conducted on January 15, was successful, and the patient was discharged on the second day post-operation. Rohan Khandelwal, Lead Consultant and Head of the Breast Centre at CK Birla Hospital, and the Primary Surgeon in the Case, stated, “The patient came to us with a huge phyllodes tumour covering the entire breast." Despite discovering the lump, she overlooked it for months due to its painless nature. While not labeled as cancer, swift removal was imperative. The tumor's size precluded the possibility of preserving the breast. Post-tumor removal, successful reconstruction of the affected area was achieved. This case underscores the significance of not underestimating painless lumps, particularly when they exhibit progressive growth. Doctors state that early detection of phyllodes tumors, a rare condition, often allows for treatment without the need for chemotherapy.
Dr. Rohan emphasized, "Timely medical attention can often preserve the breast. However, in cases of substantial tumor growth, as seen in this instance, reconstruction becomes a crucial part of the treatment plan." Doctors stated that the patient, currently on the road to recovery, will undergo radiotherapy as part of her treatment plan.
