In Prayagraj district, Uttar Pradesh, more than 24 government doctors have been found absent from their assigned government health centres—without submitting any resignation or informing authorities—for several years after being appointed. Despite repeated reminders and notices, these doctors did not report back to duty. The district's Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Arun Kumar Tiwari, has taken official steps by compiling a list of these absentee doctors and forwarding it to the state government for further disciplinary action .
Dr Tiwari affirmed that most of these doctors held positions at community health centres (CHCs) and primary health centres (PHCs), essential healthcare facilities serving rural populations. Their prolonged absence has left gaps in medical services in these regions. This issue has persisted despite the government's efforts to strengthen rural healthcare infrastructure and improve staff availability.
The CMO's list is expected to prompt administrative and legal measures by the state health department. Such action might include departmental inquiries, resignation acceptance, or possible dismissal. The move underscores the state's growing intolerance for non‑performance and sends a message that attendance and duty compliance are taken seriously in the wake of ongoing efforts to enhance rural public health services .
