Gurugram (Haryana): Medanta Becomes the First Indian Hospital to Deploy AI-Enabled Penumbra Lightning Technology for Pulmonary Embolism Treatment. Since July 2023, the hospital has treated 25 cases of this life-threatening condition using the new technology. Revolutionizing endovascular procedures, the Penumbra Lightning 12 F Catheter, driven by AI, has significantly enhanced the targeted extraction of clots. Not only has this pioneering approach expedited patient recovery, but it has also minimized blood loss, thereby reducing associated complications such as anaemia. Arriving with severe deep vein thrombosis in his leg and a non-obstructive clot in his lung, the inaugural patient was a 62-year-old man. Employing the cutting-edge Penumbra Lightning 12 F catheter, the medical team executed a swift and precise removal of clots, delivering instantaneous relief. Astonishingly, the patient achieved discharge within a mere 48 hours, underscoring the remarkable efficacy of this innovative treatment paradigm. Organizing a conference on advancing understanding of this innovative technology, Medanta Gurugram's Division of Vascular & Endovascular Sciences aimed to promote best practices in treating the critical condition of pulmonary embolism. The event, themed 'Pulmonary Embolism: What is known & what we need to know – State-of-the-art treatment and scientific updates,' contributed to enhancing knowledge and fostering excellence in the field. Dr. Naresh Trehan, the esteemed Chairman and Managing Director at Medanta, underscored the transformative impact of cutting-edge technology in elevating both recovery rates and overall outcomes for patients grappling with pulmonary embolism. Pioneering a transformative initiative, Dr. Naresh Trehan introduced the PEiRT (Pulmonary Embolism Interventions and Response Team) program, strategically designed to heighten awareness regarding the condition, elucidate available treatments, and significantly enhance health outcomes for those affected. Highlighting the risks linked to prolonged inactivity, Dr. Rajiv Parakh, Chairman of Peripheral Vascular and Endovascular Sciences at Medanta Gurugram, underscored the potential of such clots to escalate into a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. He emphasized how Penumbra Lightning has revolutionized clot extraction, making it safer and speeding up the rehabilitation process.
