A team of specialists at Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Madurai successfully treated a 50-year-old man diagnosed with a rare thoracic aortic aneurysm. The patient, who came from Pudukottai, had been suffering from continuous hoarseness of voice, which initially led doctors at another hospital to suspect lung cancer. However, multiple tests including bronchoscopy and biopsy did not support that diagnosis.
When the patient reached the Madurai facility, doctors conducted a detailed contrast CT scan. The imaging revealed that the real cause of his symptoms was an aneurysm in the thoracic aorta, a potentially life-threatening condition if not treated on time. The swelling had begun pressing on the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which explained his persistent voice change.
The cardiac and vascular surgery team opted for a hybrid revascularisation and stenting procedure to manage the condition. Before placing the stent, they created a bypass from the left carotid artery to the left subclavian artery to ensure stable blood flow to the arm. Once the bypass was secured, the team inserted the stent to isolate the aneurysm safely.
Doctors reported that the procedure went smoothly and the patient’s recovery has been steady. Follow-up scans one month later showed no complications, confirming the success of the treatment. The patient’s voice has also started improving with regular speech therapy sessions.
The medical team noted that unusual symptoms like hoarseness should not be ignored, as they can sometimes indicate underlying cardiovascular conditions. They added that timely diagnosis and advanced surgical techniques played a crucial role in avoiding a major risk to the patient’s life.
