On Monday and tuesday, 24th and 25th june approximately 1,000 junior doctors from Gandhi Hospital and Osmania General Hospital, along with around 6,000 junior doctors statewide, commenced a strike, impacting medical services across Telangana. Despite assurances from non-striking medical staff that hospital operations remained unaffected, outpatient services, elective surgeries, and ward duties were boycotted as part of the protest. Emergency services continued without disruption.
Dr. G Sai Sri Harsha, President of the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA), stated that the strike would persist into Tuesday, emphasizing the government's delay in addressing their demands, which could be swiftly resolved with committed action. Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha later met with the junior doctors and announced the issuance of a Budget Release Order for stipends in the 2024-25 period, subject to periodic review and adjustments.
Addressing security concerns, the Director of Medical Education (DME), Dr. N Vani, was directed to discuss the deployment of the Special Protection Force (SPF) with the home department. Minister Narasimha also reiterated the government's commitment to construct a new building at Osmania General Hospital. However, issues regarding new hostel facilities at Kakatiya Medical College Warangal and the deployment of security forces remained unresolved.
Despite the financial relief of Rs 406 crore allocated by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka to the DME, ensuring adequate funding for the department, junior doctors insisted that their strike would continue until stipends were consistently credited on time. Their demand for the implementation of a "green channel" for prompt stipend payments echoed throughout their protest.
At Osmania Medical College, the slogan "Marpu Kavali, Green Channel Implementation Ravali" resonated among the striking doctors, underscoring their persistence for administrative reform. The strike's continuation hinges on further dialogue and concrete action from the government to meet their demands effectively.
