Dr. Ishwar Chander Verma, who was honored with the Padma Shri award, and served as an advisor at the Institute of Medical Genetics and Genomics at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, has passed away, as confirmed by a statement from the hospital on Friday. The statement from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) expressed profound sadness at the passing of Prof Verma, acknowledging his contributions over four decades as both a teacher and a senior colleague, a loss felt deeply by all who knew him. It further emphasized that his role in shaping the department of genetics and genomics at SGRH was characterized by a remarkable blend of success, dedication, and forward-thinking, ensuring a lasting impact for future generations. Professor Verma, renowned for his groundbreaking research contributions, was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri in 2023 and the BC Roy National Award in 1983. Under his exemplary guidance, the Institute of Medical Genetics and Genomics at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) was awarded the esteemed FICCI 9th Annual Healthcare Excellence Award in 2017. He pioneered several significant advancements in genetics in India, including establishing the first Genetic Centre at AIIMS Delhi in 1968, creating the first registry for genetic disorders, offering advanced genetic tests at affordable rates through indigenous methods, and deciphering the molecular architecture of various disorders such as thalassemia, muscular dystrophy, deafness, and albinism. Additionally, he contributed his expertise to numerous committees of the Government of India, including those under the Ministry of Health, ICMR, and the Department of Biotechnology. Professor Verma was honored with awards from various prestigious institutes, including the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), the Ranbaxy Science Foundation, and AIIMS, New Delhi.
