In a significant move, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced substantial salary increases for medical professionals in the state. The decision, revealed during a recent event organized by the Health and Family Welfare Department, aims to recognize and reward the dedication of doctors and healthcare workers.
Under the new structure, senior resident doctors will see their monthly salaries rise by ₹15,000. Specifically, those holding diplomas will now earn ₹80,000, up from ₹65,000, while postgraduate senior residents' salaries will increase from ₹70,000 to ₹85,000. Post-doctorate senior residents are set to receive ₹1 lakh, a notable jump from the previous ₹75,000. Additionally, interns, house staff, and postgraduate trainees will benefit from a ₹10,000 salary increment.
Beyond financial incentives, the Chief Minister has extended the permissible distance for private practice by government doctors. Previously restricted to a 20 km radius from their primary workplace, doctors can now practice privately up to 30 km away. This adjustment offers greater flexibility for medical professionals seeking to serve a broader community.
These announcements come in the wake of recent incidents affecting the medical community, underscoring the government's commitment to addressing the concerns of healthcare professionals. By enhancing compensation and practice flexibility, the state aims to boost morale and acknowledge the critical role of doctors in society.
