Chennai: The Madras High Court, in its ruling, emphasized that postgraduate (PG) doctors who refuse to fulfill their bond service obligations by declining to work in government hospitals are violating the fundamental rights of the poor and needy patients. This refusal has led to a significant shortage of doctors throughout the State, prompting the court to deny relief to the doctors seeking exemption from their bond commitments. Justice SM Subramaniam condemned the approach of these doctors, highlighting that the medical profession is inherently noble. Dismissing the writ petitions aimed at nullifying the bond agreements, the judge expressed disapproval towards the doctors' actions, emphasizing their obligation to serve in government hospitals as per the terms of their bonds. The judge underscored the substantial investment made by the government, exceeding Rs. 2 crore, to train each postgraduate student. Allowing doctors to shirk their bond obligations would not only undermine the public interest but also foster a culture of neglect towards the very individuals whose education was subsidized by the state. Such an attitude, the judgment concluded, is unacceptable and detrimental to the ethos of the medical profession.
