Bengaluru: Indian Medical Association (IMA) reports that with the rising number of medical graduates annually and a significant portion facing unemployment, both the nation as a whole and Karnataka specifically are poised to export doctors to various countries. Numerous unemployed doctors are seeking employment opportunities abroad, facing uncertainty and a lack of job security. In response to this concern, the IMA, under the leadership of Dr. RV Asokan, the IMA president, is actively working on establishing a facilitation and information center. The IMA will assist doctors and other medical professionals in securing overseas employment through the establishment of this center. This initiative will involve collaboration with partners such as the National Medical Association and the Overseas Medical Graduates’ Association. Dr. Asokan informed that the IMA is collaborating with the National Employment Exchange for the recruitment of medical professionals. The IMA reports that out of approximately 1,08,915 students graduating annually from 706 registered medical colleges, 40,000 will be unable to enroll in MBBS and PG courses. Dr. Asokan stated, "These 40,000 students enroll in coaching centers for NEET and other entrance tests for PG courses. Currently, there are approximately 1.2 lakh unemployed doctors in India. Providing them with government jobs would be beneficial." The IMA is exploring innovative approaches adopted by certain states for doctor employment. Highlighting Kerala as an example, the IMA director mentioned the state's incentive programs for PG students and the initiation of outreach programs, where doctors conduct monthly home visits to patients. The director emphasized that each state is urged to devise innovative methods for doctor employment and to collaborate with the IMA by sharing their approaches. Expressing concern, a doctor employed in a private hospital mentioned, "The plight of young doctors is dire. They face harassment, enduring long hours of work with inadequate pay in private hospitals. Despite their eagerness to work in rural areas, opportunities are limited, and there are no new fields or scopes available for them."
