As air quality worsens across northern India, doctors have warned that the rising pollution levels this winter could severely affect public health. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in several cities has already reached dangerous levels, prompting medical experts to advise people to wear high-quality masks for protection.

Health specialists say that common cloth or surgical masks are not enough to block harmful pollutants like PM2.5 particles, which can enter deep into the lungs and cause respiratory and heart problems. They recommend using certified masks such as N95, KN95, or FFP2, which are designed to filter even the finest airborne particles.

Doctors also emphasize that the mask must fit properly to provide full protection. A loose mask or one with air gaps can reduce its effectiveness. People are also advised to avoid outdoor activities during peak pollution hours, especially early mornings and late evenings when smog tends to be heavier.

Experts further suggest using air purifiers indoors and keeping windows closed during heavy smog days. Those with asthma, bronchitis, or other respiratory issues should take extra precautions and follow their medication routines strictly.

With winter approaching, pollution levels are expected to worsen due to low wind speed and increased burning of waste. Health officials urge citizens to remain alert, wear proper masks, and stay indoors as much as possible when air quality turns poor.
