Recent estimates by the government suggest that the number of registered allopathic and AYUSH-practitioners combined gives the country a doctor-population ratio of about 1 doctor for every 811 persons.
The increase is attributed to a growth in both the number of medical colleges and available MBBS and postgraduate seats over the past decade.
To improve access particularly in rural and underserved areas, measures such as posting postgraduate students in district hospitals, upgrading district/referral hospitals into medical colleges, and offering incentives for doctors working in remote regions have been initiated.
