In a remarkable medical case, doctors at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad successfully extracted a pen cap that had been lodged in a man's lungs for over two decades. The 26-year-old patient from Karimnagar had been experiencing a persistent cough and unexplained weight loss, which intensified over the past ten days, leading him to seek medical attention.

Upon conducting a CT scan, the medical team, led by Dr. Shubhakar Nadella, Consultant Clinical and Interventional Pulmonologist, identified an unusual obstruction in the patient's lungs. During the procedure, they discovered the obstruction was a pen cap. Further inquiry with the patient's family revealed that, at the age of five, he had accidentally swallowed a pen cap. At that time, medical examinations did not detect the foreign object, and it was assumed to have passed naturally.

The removal procedure, which lasted nearly three hours, involved the use of flexible bronchoscopy. Doctors meticulously cleared the tissue buildup, lymph nodes, and muscle formations that had developed around the pen cap before successfully extracting it. Despite the prolonged presence of the foreign object causing lung damage, the medical team managed to restore the affected area with antibiotic treatment, and the patient has since fully recovered.

Dr. Nadella emphasized the importance of timely medical intervention in such cases, noting that leaving foreign objects in the body can lead to severe complications. He advised parents to monitor their children's activities closely and seek immediate medical attention if ingestion of a foreign object is suspected, to prevent potential health issues.
