The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to hire 150 postgraduate doctors on a two-year contract to address the shortage of medical staff in the city. These doctors, selected through a counseling session held on April 25 by the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, will be posted across various urban healthcare facilities. This includes 140 Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs), 140 Urban Health and Wellness Centres (UHWCs), 16 Urban Community Health Centres (UCHCs), three maternity hospitals, and one infectious diseases hospital.
The appointed doctors will serve as assistant surgeons and receive a monthly salary ranging from ₹56,100 to ₹1.77 lakh, along with standard allowances. They are required to sign a bond committing to a minimum of two years of service. The proposal for these appointments was presented at a recent council meeting and is awaiting approval from the Public Health Standing Committee. Deputy Mayor M. Mahesh Kumar mentioned that the contracts could be renewed after the initial term.
This initiative comes in response to a current shortfall of 155 medical officers within the GCC. By recruiting these postgraduate doctors, the corporation aims to strengthen its healthcare services and ensure better medical care for the residents of Chennai.
