Doctors in Maharashtra, led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), have strongly opposed the state government’s recent decision to allow homeopathic doctors to register with the allopathic council. According to Dr. Santosh Kadam, the state IMA president, this move could bring underqualified practitioners into conventional medical practice and pose serious health risks to the public.
The controversy centres on a new bridge course in modern pharmacology that lasts six months. Homeopathic doctors who complete this course can now register with the Maharashtra Medical Council as modern medicine practitioners. The IMA argues this is unprecedented and undermines the established standards and ethical regulations of modern medicine .
In response, the IMA and allied groups have planned a city-wide march followed by a token strike on July 11. They have also filed a petition with the Bombay High Court and warned that allowing homeopathic doctors to treat common emergencies could lead to incorrect diagnoses and harm to patients.
