Chennai: The Tamil Nadu health authorities have constituted a special committee to investigate claims that middlemen and doctors from the state may be involved in a pan‑India kidney trafficking racket recently unearthed in Maharashtra. The move comes after a farmer from Chandrapur in Maharashtra alleged that he sold his kidney abroad to repay a debt, triggering a wider probe by Maharashtra police into an alleged organ trade network.
The new three‑member panel, led by an additional director from the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services, will examine whether any doctors in Tamil Nadu were connected to the racket and if vulnerable individuals, including farmers, were being targeted by such fraudsters. Officers from a Maharashtra Special Investigation Team had earlier visited Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) as part of their inquiries into the case.
Officials said the committee will complete its investigation and submit a report to the state government. Depending on the findings, further action could be taken against those found to be implicated in the alleged illegal organ trade.
The probe reflects growing concern over illegal organ trafficking in India and highlights the need for stricter oversight of medical professionals and middlemen who could exploit the poor and indebted. Probe into Tiruchy Kidney Theft Allegations"
