The Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) has suspended the medical licenses of two doctors for three years due to their involvement in fraudulent activities related to the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) scheme. Dr. Sanjay Mulji Patolia, Director of Khyati Multispeciality Hospital in Ahmedabad, and Dr. Shaileshkumar Amrutlal Anand, former General Manager of the PMJAY scheme in Gujarat, were found guilty of serious misconduct. The suspensions took effect on February 11, 2025.
This action follows the deaths of two PMJAY beneficiaries from Mehsana district on November 11, 2024, after undergoing unnecessary angioplasty procedures at Khyati Hospital. Investigations revealed that the patients did not require the surgeries, leading to allegations of a fraudulent scheme exploiting the PMJAY-Mukhyamantri Amrutam (MA) program. Dr. Patolia and eight others from Khyati Hospital were subsequently charged with culpable homicide and other serious offenses.
In response to these incidents, the Gujarat government has imposed a statewide ban on medical camps associated with the PMJAY-MA scheme to prevent further misuse. The government is also working to strengthen regulatory frameworks, including stricter hospital empanelment procedures and enhanced oversight of medical claims, to safeguard patient welfare and maintain the integrity of the healthcare system.
