Sassoon General Hospital in Pune, part of B. J. Medical College, achieved a medical milestone on August 1, 2025, by successfully completing a robotic-assisted total knee replacement on a 62-year‑old woman from Solapur district. Under the leadership of Dean Dr Eknath Pawar and Orthopaedics Head Dr Shrinivas Shintre, a specialised surgical team including Dr Pravin Londhe, Dr Pradeep Jadhav, Dr Prafull Ingle, and Dr Ritwik Shaw guided the procedure, aided by the Anaesthesia team led by Dr Surekha Shinde with Dr Vijay Patil, Dr Tushar Sidgur, and Dr Neha Jha .
The patient had suffered from severe osteoarthritis, especially in her left knee, causing intense pain that interfered with daily activities and sleep. A CT scan of her leg was used to generate a precise 3D model that helped surgeons pre-plan the implant placement. During surgery, the robotic arm, guided by trackers on the thigh and shin, made highly accurate bone cuts, enabling optimal positioning of the artificial joint after initial trial fitting .
Doctors reported several benefits of using robotic assistance in knee replacement, including greater precision, reduced postoperative pain, less risk of complications such as fat embolism, and quicker recovery. This approach minimises deep drilling and significantly lowers soft tissue trauma, making it a safer option for patients in comparison with traditional surgery methods.
