A UAE-based Indian doctor and philanthropist, Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, has generously pledged ₹6 crore to support families affected by the tragic Air India Flight AI 171 crash in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into the BJ Medical College hostel on June 12, resulting in the deaths of 241 people aboard and at least 38 on the ground, including several MBBS students studying at the campus.
Dr Shamsheer’s aid package focuses especially on the students and doctors who suffered the most. He has promised ₹1 crore to the families of each of the four deceased students. Additionally, ₹20 lakh will be given to five seriously injured students and to each family of the doctors who lost loved ones in the accident. The funds will be delivered in coordination with the Junior Doctors’ Association at BJ Medical College to ensure quick and fair distribution.
Announcing the support from Abu Dhabi, Dr Shamsheer shared that the images from the hostel, which he had once lived in during his own medical training, moved him deeply. Recalling his time at Kasturba Medical College and Sri Ramachandra Medical College, he said the tragedy struck “too close to home.” This is not his first response to such a disaster—he previously extended relief and employment support following the 2010 Mangalore air crash.
