Top-ranked candidates in the latest NEET-PG are increasingly choosing non-surgical specialities such as General Medicine (MD), Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology and Endocrinology — strongly outpacing interest in surgical branches.
Observers point out that non-surgical streams are seen as providing quicker route to independent practice, with less gruelling hours and stress. Many young doctors cited long working hours, high burnout risk, delayed career stability and medico-legal pressures as key reasons to avoid surgical disciplines.
Because MD and related non-surgical courses allow faster settlement and often enough clinical demand, these branches witnessed this year’s highest competition in NEET-PG counselling.
The trend reflects a broader shift: many medical graduates now prefer lifestyle balance and earlier stability over the prolonged training and uncertainty associated with becoming a surgeon.
