The Command Hospital Pune recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing two piezoelectric bone conduction hearing implants. This accomplishment marks a groundbreaking advancement for government hospitals in India. These implants offer new hope for patients grappling with conductive or mixed hearing loss, as well as those suffering from single-sided deafness (SSD) who are ineligible for cochlear implantation and derive limited benefit from hearing aids or middle ear surgery. Led by a dedicated team of doctors from the Southern Command hospital's ear, nose, and throat (ENT) department, the surgeries included a procedure on a seven-year-old boy with congenital external and middle ear anomalies and severe hearing loss, as well as another surgery on an adult with SSD. The piezoelectric bone conduction hearing implant system, albeit costly, provides a viable solution for individuals with various forms of hearing impairment. Lt Col (Dr) Rahul Kurkure, a neurotologist and implant surgeon, conducted the surgeries under the supervision of Col (Dr) Nitu Singh, the senior advisor and head of the ENT department. The ENT department at Command Hospital (Southern Command) holds the distinction of being a designated neurotology center within the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
