Kolkata is witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases, with many patients exhibiting symptoms reminiscent of the Omicron wave in early 2022. Doctors report that approximately 30% of patients are experiencing gastrointestinal issues such as loose motion and mild diarrhoea, alongside common symptoms like fever and cough. The current strain, identified as JN.1, is believed to be a variant of Omicron, which may explain the similarity in symptoms. 

While most cases remain mild, hospitals are noting an uptick in admissions, prompting the expansion of isolation wards. Elderly patients, especially those with pre-existing health conditions, are showing rapid health deterioration. However, younger individuals without comorbidities are also being affected. Hospitals like CMRI, Charnock, Manipal, Peerless, and BP Poddar are reporting admissions across various age groups, with symptoms ranging from fever and cough to nasal issues and lower respiratory tract infections. 

Medical experts emphasize the importance of not dismissing mild symptoms, as overlapping signs with other common illnesses can delay diagnosis. They advise increased testing and preventive measures, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children. Hospitals are reinstating safety protocols, including the use of masks and hand sanitizers, to curb the spread of the virus.
