Doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, successfully saved the life of a 60-year-old woman suffering from a rare and life-threatening diaphragmatic hernia. The woman had collapsed due to cardiac arrest, and further tests revealed that her stomach, spleen, and intestines had moved into her chest cavity, pressing against her heart and lungs.
She was initially treated at Apollo Hospitals, Noida, and later shifted to Indraprastha Apollo for advanced care. To prepare her for the complex procedure, doctors used Botox injections to relax her abdominal muscles, creating space for the surgery.
A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Arun Prasad performed a robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci system to reposition the displaced organs and repair the large tear in her diaphragm with a biodegradable mesh.
The patient recovered quickly and was able to walk and breathe normally within three days of the operation. Doctors described her recovery as remarkable and credited the success to the precision and minimal invasiveness of robotic technology.
The hospital said the case highlights how advanced robotic surgery is revolutionizing complex treatments in India, offering new hope to patients with rare and critical medical conditions.
