Doctors at AIIMS Raipur performed a lifesaving procedure when a 13‑year‑old boy was admitted on June 30 with symptoms of fever, chest pain, and coughing up blood that had lasted over two weeks. The medical team discovered that the boy had accidentally breathed in a sharp metallic pushpin while playing, which lodged itself deep in his left lung’s bronchial passage. An X-ray confirmed the presence of the foreign object along with signs of localized pneumonia.
Recognizing the risk of severe lung damage and internal bleeding, the doctors quickly scheduled an emergency bronchoscopy. Under sedation, they used video-guided instruments to locate and gently remove the pushpin with specialised forceps. The procedure, which caused only minor bleeding, was completed safely and without the need for open surgery.
The boy recovered well and was discharged the next day with medicines and advice for physiotherapy. This successful intervention underscores the importance of early detection and the use of minimally invasive techniques to remove airway foreign bodies. The timely action preserved the patient’s lung health and prevented complications that might have required major surgery.
