Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi have successfully performed a rare microsurgery in which they used the second toe from a young man’s amputated leg to reconstruct his missing thumb. The 20-year-old patient had lost his left leg below the knee and his left thumb in a road accident involving a bike and a tractor.

Since both the amputated leg and the thumb were severely crushed and unsuitable for direct re-implantation, the surgical team decided to utilise the intact second toe from the amputated limb for the thumb reconstruction.

The procedure was led by Dr Mahesh Mangal, Senior Consultant & Head of the Department of Plastic, Cosmetic & Hand Microsurgery. He explained that the department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has been performing microsurgery since 1981 and has completed more than 700 re-implantations of body parts like fingers, toes, scalp, ears and upper limbs.

Dr Mangal also emphasised the importance of rapid response after amputation injuries, locating the amputated part at the accident site, keeping it preserved correctly, and transporting it quickly to a specialised centre are all critical for successful outcomes.

The hospital reports that the patient has regained a functional thumb and is recovering well, marking a significant restoration of hand movement and function following the traumatic accident.
