Thousands of junior doctors in England began a five-day strike on Friday, demanding better pay and more training opportunities. The strike involves resident-level doctors, who make up nearly half of hospital medical staff, and is expected to significantly affect hospital services across the country.
Their main demands include restoring the real value of their salaries, which they say has eroded over the last two decades. Many junior doctors argue that a substantial increase is needed to match rising living costs and years of stagnant wages. Another major concern is the limited number of training posts, with more than 30,000 applicants competing for only around 10,000 positions each year.
The UK government maintains that it has already raised doctors’ pay considerably over the past few years. However, unions say the increase is not enough to cover the long-term losses caused by inflation and an expanding workload.
This strike is part of a broader wave of industrial actions across the UK, as workers in multiple sectors continue to push for fairer compensation and improved working conditions.
