Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned that antibiotic resistance is becoming a serious health problem in India. He said recent reports from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) show that many common antibiotics are no longer effective against illnesses like pneumonia and urinary tract infections. This, he noted, is a matter of great concern for everyone.
Modi explained that one of the main reasons for this rising resistance is the way people use antibiotic medicines without proper medical advice. Many people believe that taking a pill will quickly cure their sickness, but this misunderstanding is making infections stronger and reducing the effectiveness of these drugs.
He urged the public to stop taking antibiotics on their own and to use them only when a qualified doctor prescribes them. He said antibiotics are not medicines to be taken casually, and that following a doctor’s guidance can help protect people’s health and slow down the development of resistant bacteria.
Modi also stressed the importance of completing the full course of antibiotics exactly as prescribed. Taking too much or too little, or stopping treatment early, can help harmful microbes survive and become even stronger.
The Prime Minister said that avoiding self-medication and relying on doctors for antibiotic use will be very helpful in maintaining the effectiveness of these life-saving medicines for the future.
