A five-year-old boy named Rohit from Salem had a serious accident on May 5 when he fell on a kitchen knife while playing at home. The knife pierced his left cheek and reached the base of his skull. His parents quickly took him to Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital (SGMKMCH). Doctors there found that the knife had gone through important facial bones and was close to a brain blood vessel, which could have caused heavy bleeding.
A team of doctors from different departments, including neurosurgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, radiology, anesthesiology, and ENT, worked together to help Rohit. Under the guidance of neurosurgeon Dr. L. Shankar, they performed emergency surgery and carefully removed the knife without damaging the nearby blood vessel. After the surgery, a scan showed a small amount of bleeding in the brain. Rohit was then moved to the High Intensive Care Unit to prevent infection and was closely watched by the pediatric team.
Doctors say that Rohit is now stable and out of danger. They credit the quick action and teamwork of the medical staff for saving his life. This incident highlights the importance of keeping sharp objects away from children and the value of skilled medical care in emergencies.
