AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad has introduced a new system that allows doctors to prescribe medicines based on a patient’s genetic makeup. This approach helps identify how a person’s body reacts to specific drugs, making treatment more accurate and effective.
In a study conducted by AIG Hospitals on about 2,000 patients, doctors found that nearly 30 percent were taking medicines that did not suit their genetic profile. Such mismatches can lead to side effects or poor recovery. To solve this, AIG partnered with GenepoweRx, a genomics and artificial intelligence company, to create personalized treatment plans.
The genetic test is done only once in a lifetime since a person’s genetic code never changes. It helps guide medication for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, neurological and psychiatric disorders, and pain management.
While similar tests abroad cost over ₹80,000, AIG Hospitals offers it in India for around ₹5,000, making it more affordable. Experts believe this marks a major step toward precision medicine, where treatment is tailored for each individual instead of following a one-size-fits-all method.
