Doctors at Medicover Hospital, Navi Mumbai, successfully performed a complex laparoscopic surgery to remove a 4-kilogram splenic hydatid cyst from a 31-year-old woman, saving her life. The woman had been suffering from severe abdominal pain, swelling, nausea, and loss of appetite for weeks before medical tests revealed the large cyst.

Hydatid cysts, caused by a parasitic infection, usually affect the liver, but in this rare case, the spleen was almost completely occupied by the cyst. Such cases account for less than 4 percent of all hydatid infections, making it a challenging and uncommon medical condition to treat.

The surgical team, led by Dr. Chirag Vaja, Dr. Sarang Bajpai, and Dr. Nitin Tawte, performed a laparoscopic splenectomy a minimally invasive procedure, to remove the cyst without puncturing it, thereby preventing the risk of fluid spillage and recurrence. Despite the large size of the cyst, the team opted for laparoscopy instead of open surgery, ensuring faster recovery and less postoperative pain for the patient.

Following the surgery, the woman recovered quickly and was discharged on the third postoperative day in stable condition. Doctors confirmed that she has returned to her normal diet and routine, with no complications reported. The hospital described the operation as a rare and successful example of advanced laparoscopic expertise saving a patient from a life-threatening condition.
