Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday reaffirmed that India now possesses sufficient medical infrastructure and urged young doctors to take full advantage of it rather than citing a lack of facilities when contemplating opportunities abroad. Addressing the 21st convocation of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, he emphasised that institutions, resources and advanced healthcare infrastructure are available across the country, dismissing claims that India lacks such facilities. 

Nadda highlighted the expansion of premier medical institutions, noting that the number of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has grown from just one to 23 under the current government, reflecting a transformed medical education landscape. He said that while young doctors are free to pursue careers overseas, they should not attribute their decision to supposed shortcomings in India’s healthcare system. 

The minister also spoke about the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, which provides up to ₹5 lakh coverage for over 62 crore people, making it one of the world’s largest health cover programmes. He reminded the graduates that medical education is a privilege and encouraged them to acknowledge their training by serving society with dedication and embracing emerging technologies in healthcare. 

Nadda praised the hardworking graduates, acknowledging their long hours and commitment, and urged them to let their perseverance and passion for patient care drive their success rather than seeking external validation. He also congratulated KGMU for its contributions in fields like organ transplants and for its reputation both nationally and internationally.
