As Diwali approaches, the Supreme Court has allowed the limited use of “green” firecrackers in Delhi and nearby regions. These crackers can be used on specific dates and times, aiming to reduce air pollution compared to traditional firecrackers. The decision is meant to help people celebrate while keeping environmental concerns in mind.
However, doctors caution that even green crackers are not completely safe. Burning them releases fine particles and toxic gases that can enter the lungs and affect breathing. Dr. Vikas Maurya, a senior respiratory expert at Fortis Hospital, says that these pollutants can worsen asthma, bronchitis, and other lung problems, even in healthy people.
Experts also warn that vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and those with existing heart or lung conditions, should be especially careful. They recommend using masks, keeping windows closed, and limiting outdoor exposure during and after fireworks.
While green crackers are a step towards cleaner celebrations, medical professionals emphasize that air quality can still deteriorate rapidly. People are urged to prioritize health and take precautions while enjoying the festival.
