The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to take strict action against government doctors involved in private practice. Expressing dissatisfaction over incomplete reports and lack of action, the court emphasized the need for measures that would deter doctors from engaging in private practice.
The court's directive came during the hearing of a petition filed by Dr. Arvind Gupta, Head of the Kidney Diseases Department at Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, Prayagraj. The petition challenged a ₹10 lakh fine imposed by the State Consumer Commission for services rendered at a private nursing home. The court sought a personal affidavit from the Principal Secretary of Medical Education regarding the enforcement of the 1983 government order that prohibits private practice by government doctors.
In respnose, the UP government has instructed district magistrates, police commissioners, and chief medical officers to investigate and report on government doctors engaged in private practice. They have been directed to recommend departmental action against such doctors by February 20, reinforcing the state's commitment to enforcing the ban on private practice among government medical professionals.
