Two Australian doctors, Dr Nada Abu Al-Rub and Dr Saya Aziz, are working inside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where they are treating patients and documenting the crisis. With international media access restricted, they have taken on the role of both medics and reporters, posting first-hand accounts of the suffering inside the hospital.
The hospital is overcrowded, with no free beds. Many of the injured are lying on the floor, while doctors struggle with a severe shortage of medicines and equipment. In some cases, staff are forced to reuse supplies stained with blood. The two doctors described heartbreaking scenes, including a young boy with severe injuries who was barely breathing when he was brought in.
The conditions have left doctors with the impossible task of deciding who has the best chance to survive. Dr Aziz said she has seen people with catastrophic wounds, including exposed organs and brain injuries. Many of the doctors now live inside the hospital itself, as it is no longer safe to leave.
Both doctors have called the situation a nightmare, saying the hospital has been repeatedly damaged during the fighting. They continue to share updates online, despite the risk, in an effort to let the world know what is happening. Their urgent appeal is for immediate humanitarian help and an end to the violence so that Gaza’s civilians can be protected.
