As Delhi’s air quality plunges to “severe” levels, doctors are warning residents about another silent danger, vitamin D deficiency. The thick layer of smog covering the city has blocked sunlight, drastically reducing exposure to the ultraviolet B rays necessary for the body to produce vitamin D.
Experts say the Air Quality Index (AQI) in several parts of Delhi-NCR has crossed 400, nearly 30 times higher than the World Health Organization’s safe limit. The smog not only harms respiratory health but also prevents sunlight from penetrating the atmosphere, leaving millions at risk of bone and immune-related problems caused by low vitamin D levels.
Health specialists are now advising people to take daily vitamin D supplements, especially during the winter pollution months. According to doctors, adults should consume about 2,000 IU per day, adolescents 1,000 IU, and children between 600 and 1,000 IU. However, they warn that excessive intake should be avoided, as it can lead to health complications.
