Indian healthcare professionals have become the backbone of many developed nations’ medical systems, according to a new report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The report reveals that India is now the largest source of migrant doctors and the second-largest source of migrant nurses across OECD countries.

Between 2000–01 and 2020–21, the number of Indian-born doctors working in OECD countries grew by 76%, reaching nearly 99,000. The growth was even higher among Indian-born nurses, rising by 435% to over 1.22 lakh. This significant increase highlights India’s major contribution to global healthcare.

The OECD attributes this trend to India’s vast medical education system, English-language proficiency, and international recruitment by countries such as the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. However, it also warns that this growing reliance on foreign-trained professionals is not temporary, and many skilled migrants still face delays in recognition of their qualifications.

While the report praises the quality and impact of Indian doctors and nurses abroad, it also raises concerns about a potential “brain drain” back home. India remains on the World Health Organization’s list of countries facing critical shortages of healthcare workers, making the balance between global demand and domestic needs increasingly important.
