Doctors in Andhra Pradesh have strongly opposed the state government’s decision to allow trained Ayurvedic practitioners to independently perform certain surgical procedures. The Andhra Pradesh chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said the move could put patient safety at risk.
The state government has permitted postgraduate Ayurveda doctors to carry out 58 specific surgeries under traditional disciplines such as Shalya Tantra and Shalakya Tantra. These include procedures related to general surgery, eye care, ENT, and dental treatment. However, doctors from the modern medicine stream argue that surgery requires years of rigorous and structured medical training.
The IMA stated that modern surgery involves detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology, anesthesia, emergency care, and post-operative management. According to them, this level of training is part of the MBBS and advanced surgical education, which Ayurvedic courses do not fully provide.
Doctors also pointed out that allowing cross-practice could dilute medical standards and create confusion among patients about who is qualified to perform surgeries. They warned that such decisions should be taken only after wide consultation with medical experts.
The association noted that the issue is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court. They urged the state government to review its decision carefully and ensure that patient safety and scientific medical practices remain the top priority.
